Much like Southern rock revivalists My Morning Jacket and Kings of Leon, Steel Train essay a post-punk take on the hoary sounds of '70s album-oriented rock; it's classic rock radio sent through a few hipster fuzz pedals.
The Early November's roots began ten years ago in Hammonton, New Jersey, when left handed Ace Enders picked up his step-dad's right-handed guitar and taught himself how to play. Since developing a growing fanbase with the Early November, Enders has graduated to a successful solo career.
New Jersey's Socratic featured vocalists/guitarists Duane Okun and Kevin Bryan, percussionist Tom Stratton, bassist Adam Swider, and pianist Vincent D'Amico. The band issued the EP It's Getting Late through No Milk in 2002, then jumped to Drive-Thru for the September 2005 full-length Lunch for the Sky. The album was filled with Socratic's earnest take on emo-pop, a piano- and vocal-heavy sound in the vein of acts like the Early November or the New Amsterdams. Shows were played with acts like Small Towns Burn a Little Slower, Tokyo Rose, and the Forecast before the guys released the EP Just Turn for free online download in late 2006.
