Whereas most up and coming alternative bands of the early '90s borrowed from the leaders of the pack (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, etc.), Blind Melon was an exception to the rule--their roots lay in classic rock (Lynyrd Skynyrd, Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin). The band's rise to stardom was abruptly ended by Shannon Hoon's untimely death in 1995. The four surviving Blind Melon members recently reunited with Travis Warren taking Hoon's spot behind the mic. The group is currently working on a new album and this marks their first tour since 1995.
Despite being hailed as 'supergroup' sounding like 'The Who on steroids with an Afro-Latin twist' (The Boston Phoenix), TOWNSHIP took the stage at the 2007 29th Annual WBCN Rock n' Roll Rumble as virtually unknown. After sweeping the competition in all 3 rounds, the secret soon revealed itself that the band contained both Vermont native and Cancer Conspiracy drummer, Greg Beadle and Boston's Runner and the Thermodynamics frontman, Marc Pinansky. In just a year and a half, Township has been featured in internationally released commercials and videos, and shared stages with anywhere from Incubus and Perry Ferrel, to the Fiery Furnaces and Richard Lloyd of Television. With two EP's under their belt and a full length due in November, these classic rock worshiping guys don't just live the music, they are the music.
"Dusty Rhodes and the River Band shoot just shy of the bull’s-eye every year—seen them make a whole pizza parlor sing along, seen them make a straight shot to Kansas and back just on merch sales out of the back of the trailer—but every year they get more and more people in more and more places just goofy in love with them, which is especially charming since all they’ve ever had out is a set of limited-release CDs and DVDs. But Cold War Kids took that same unsigned set-up all the way to international album release and five minutes on Letterman, and although Dusty and co. have been on the slog longer, they’re pointed toward the same place. They got shotgun-wedding country charisma and a swap-meet-rock sound (Creedence, the Band, the Beatles) that someone will make into gold records (maybe attached producer Ikey Owens from Mars Volta) and 2007 will be the year that the close calls finally connect."
