The Suffers
The Suffers
The Suffers are Houston’s award-winning 8-piece ensemble that have redefined the sound of Gulf Coast Soul. Established in 2011, The Suffers’ lineup was curated by bassist Adam Castaneda and vocalist/keyboardist Pat Kelly, who brought on trumpet player Jon Durbin, trombonist Michael Razo, guitarist Kevin Bernier, percussionist Jose “Chapy” Luna, and drummer/vocalist Nick Zamora, while frontwoman Kam Franklin topped off the group with soaring vocals.

The last two years have brought the band to new heights, as they played 300+ shows across North America, Europe, Japan and Australia, visited NPR in Washington, DC for a Tiny Desk Concert, made their national television debut on Late Show With David Letterman, and released their highly anticipated self-titled album alongside performances on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and Jimmy Kimmel Live! In a short time, the band has progressed from packing Houston venues to accepting invitations for featured performances at Hangout Music Festival, Forecastle Festival, Electric Forest Festival, Afropunk, Pemberton Music Festival, Austin City Limits, Newport Folk Festival, High Water Festival, XPoNential Festival, High Sierra Music Festival, Landmark Music Festival, Voodoo Music + Arts Experience, LouFest, AmericanaFest, UTOPiAfest, SXSW, Free Press Summer Festival, Untapped Festival, CMJ Music Marathon, and more. The Suffers have remained a local favorite, accepting 23 Houston Press Music Awards in the last four years. The band is currently putting the final touches on a 2018 full length release!

The Suitcase Junket Live With Others

Between the full-length, solo Americana release Pile Driver in 2017 and a full-on rock treatise due out in early 2019, The Suitcase Junket -- multi-insrumentalist, artist, tinkerer, swamp yankee, and Vermont native Matt Lorenz-- released a surprise EP in 2018, entitled Live With Others. The EP was a simple idea: six tracks recorded in concert with friends and relations. It marked a year in which The Suitcase Junket's stage shows have swung back and forth between Lorenz's standard solo self-reliance and big nights of special guests and far-ranging collaboration. This show in Burlington will be a unique and unpredictable experience. From the salvaged sounds of American juke joints, back porches, honky tonks, and rock halls, The Suitcase Junket conjures a whole new sound. Special guests TBA. Come out thesuitcasejunket.com

"After seeing and hearing the unique musical output of Matt Lorenz, “The Suitcase Junket”, we were enthralled ... " -- Make magazine premiere of "Mountain of Mind"

The Suitcase Junket's "songs range from the arty grunge of “The Next Act” and punk-blues stomp of “Evangeline” to the fingerpicked “Busted Gut” and the uplifting “Mountain of Mind,” its support for people in transition sealed by a catchy wordless chorus. They appear on Pile Driver, his fourth album and April debut on Signature Sounds, the same label that launched Lake Street Dive ... " -- Improper Bostonian

"Lorenz, a master of multitasking, plays guitar while drumming with his feet and boasts the astonishing ability to sing two notes at once using a technique similar to the one made famous by Tuvan throat singers. When it comes right down to it, though, Lorenz relies as much on methods tried-and-true: bluesy guitar riffs, tenacious melodies and a singing voice both weathered and nimble. You don’t need to witness his physics-defying performance to be captivated; the music stands ..." -- WBUR (National Public Radio), Boston
