Dina El Wedidi
Dina El Wedidi
Dina El Wedidi is a traditional Egyptian singer with a global twist. While her powerful chant draws from Egyptian folk songs, her lyrics speak to a generation of young Egyptians estranged from their government and looking for connection. She is carving out her place in the Egyptian music scene while giving shape to the scene itself. In 2011, Wedidi became one of the first members of The Nile Project, a cultural and environmental ethnomusicology project where she collaborated with musicians from all of the Nile countries, touring through East Africa and the United States, and making two albums. Her mentor, Brazilian music icon Gilberto Gil, advised Wedidi on her 2014 debut album, Turning Back (Tedawar W’Tergaa).

This presentation is a part of Center Stage, a public diplomacy initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts, is made possible in cooperation with the U.S. Regional Arts Organizations, and with support from the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, and the Trust for Mutual Understanding. General management is provided by Lisa Booth Management, Inc.
